A Thermal Degradation Study of Orgaophosphorus Flame Retardant Cotton Fabrics by TGA-DSC
In this study one of the commercially available flame retardant (FR) organophosphorous agents, mainly N-methylol-3-dimethoxyphosphoryl propionamide (trade name: Pyrovatex CP new), was impregnated onto cotton fabrics. The thermal degradation and the flammability behavior of the cotton samples have been investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The total weight loss corresponds to the amount of char formed during the thermal decomposition of cotton materials. The char quantity is related to the degree of flame retardance. Char yield of analyzed samples at 400 °C indicate a much higher value for FR treated samples both unwashed and washed, compared to the raw cotton. Additionally, limiting oxygen index (LOI) was determined, while the laundering durability of the treated samples was also evaluated.
