Electron Spin Resonance in Studying Nanocomposite Rubber Materials
Physical basis of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and its application to the study of polymer systems are briefly described. This chapter is focused particularly on the use of nitroxide radicals introduced in a polymer matrix by diffusion (spin probe) or attached to polymer chains by covalent bond (spin label). Recent results obtained by spin probe method in studying natural rubber containing the silica and organically modified clay nanoparticles have been elaborated. ESR spectra of spin probe measured in a wide temperature range have shown that segmental motions are hindered in the presence of nanofiller. The influence of filler type and loading as well as of coupling agent on motional heterogeneity has been discussed.
