Some experimental properties on reversibility of leucodye thermochromic inks
UV-curable leucodye-based inks that change colour due to a change in temperature, also know as thermochromic inks, were analysed. Inks in black, blue and red hues with an activation temperature of 31 °C were applied. The colour of thermochromic samples is not depended only on their momentary temperature but also on their thermal history, thus showing colour hysteresis. For the blue and red samples similar hysteresis loops were obtained and a narrower one for the black sample, as measured by cycling in 14–40–14 °C region. The blue and black samples have approximately closed loops however a small colour difference was obtained even after one cycle for the red one consequently keeping the loop slightly opened. CIE2000 total colour difference for all three samples was calculated for a particular temperature when reached by heating and cooling, giving an idea of the width of the hysteresis loops. No complete discoloration was obtained when heating the samples well above the activation temperature. Similar yellow colour was obtained for all samples.
