Cervical spine injury and multiple sclerosis
Nine patients with clinically diagnosed and laboratory verified multiple sclerosis are presented. The patients exclusively exhibited the spinal form of multiple sclerosis. In their case histories, a cervical spine injury was denoted as a provoking factor for the onset of the disease. Four of these nine patients also showed a picture of cervical spondylogenic myelopathy. MRI showed the formation of demyelinating plaques, primarily in the cervical segment of the spinal cord. The genesis of multiple sclerosis in these patients is discussed according to nonspecific blood-brain barrier disorders at the injury level.
