Occurence of great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias (Linnaeus, 1758)and basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus, 1758)in the Eastern Adriatic and their protection.
Within 31 different species of sharks reported in the Adriatic, the Great white shark and the Basking shark are included in very rare species. The Great white shark is a apex predator in the animal kingdom, while the Basking shark, because of its immense size and power, is without any real predator. Accordingly, these two species, as like as the other sharks, have life history characteristics that make them particularly vulnerable to overfishing. These characteristics include slow growth, delayed ages at maturity, low fecundity and long gestation periods. A number of studies, carried out throughout the world indicate that numbers of these two species decline. This paper gives collected data of records of these two species in the Eastern Adriatic, with a proposal of their protection in the same area.
