The analysis of population structure based on morphometric dimensions of Metacarpal bones (the Island of Krk, Croatia)

The aim of this study was to examine the sample of 355 autochtonous, rural inhabitants of the island of Krk to investigate its population structure through a so called analytic holistic approach by examining the morphometric dimensions of metacarpal bones and by comparing available sets of biological (genetic, morphometric, dermatoglyphic), bio-cultural (migration), cultural (linguistic) and geographic data. The morphometry of the metacarpal bones was performed to Barnett and Nordin procedure and biological distances were estimated using Mahalanobis D2 method. Population structure was assessed through Mantel's permutation test using E2 genetic distances for classical serogenetic markers, Nei's DA genetic distances for HLA and STR, Hemming's measures of similarity for basic vocabulary, geographic distances and migration kinship matrices estimated according to the method proposed by Malécot and modified by Morton. This study indicated a close relationship between two sets of phenotypic distances (morphometric dimensions of metacarpal bones and dermatoglyphes) in females, low correlation between phenotypic (morphometric dimensions of metacarpal bones) and genetic distances as well as a low correlation between phenotypic and geographic distances in both genders.
