Comparison of periods of RC frames with and without RC core strengthening using empiric expressions

For the earthquake design of RC structures, period of vibration is not known immediately, and because of that the simplified expressions are given in the construction rules, which usually link the base period with the height of the construction. The reason to determine the period of vibration is that it is the starting parameter in the process of determining the earthquake force on the structure. By knowing the type of the soil and the period of vibration, earthquake force is determined by multiplying the weight of the structure with the ground acceleration assessed from the response spectrum diagram. For this reason it is important to have a good starting assumption of period of vibration of the observed construction. The aim of this paper is to verify these empirical expressions, which are given by different authors and Eurocode 8. Empirical expressions are based on the analysis of real structures and theoretical methods. It is assumed that the empirical expressions are valid if they meet certain requirements that are generally accepted and given in Eurocode 8. These are the requirements regarding the distribution of mass, stiffness, regularity of the structure etc., which provide assumed behavior of buildings in the earthquake. Models that will be made are based on those requirements and the results will be compared with empirical expressions. Empirical expressions that will be used are given by Eurocode 8, Kobayashi, Navarro and as general expression for multi story frame structures. The RC frame structures and RC frame structures strengthened with RC core will be modeled. They are modeled in order to observe changes of periods of vibration due to increase of stiffness by implementing the core. When modeling, besides the general requirements on the structures, typical requirements for particular types of structural systems will be applied. These requirements relate to the dimensions of the elements, layout of the walls, the amount of required reinforcment, etc., and all in order to obtain more accurate results. Results of the models and empirical expressions will be compared and the conclusion about applicability of the expressions will be drawn.
