high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in an elderly Croatian population.
The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of MS in relatively healthy elderly Croatian populations from 4 different centres: the inland mainly rural region Virovitica, inland urban centre Zagreb, mainly rural Adriatic region of Omiš and urban centre Split. The IDF and NECP ATP III criteria for diagnosis of MS were used. The concentrations of glucose, creatinine, urea, total proteins, albumin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, C-reactive protein, and lipid components, as well as catalytic activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) were determined. Nutritional and lifestyle habits were collected as questionnaire data. High prevalence of MS has been observed in the elderly Croatian population. In male population ALP and GGT activities were significantly higher in subjects with MS. In female population 1-antitripsin concentrations were significantly lower in subjects with MS. Data concerning nutritional habits showed that only moderate consumption of wine indicated the protective role against MS in the population presented.
