Evaluation of Options for Power Generation Expansion in the Southeast Europe
Energy market of the Southeast Europe (SEE) is of a large interest of investors, as needs for investments into system infrastructure are substantial. During the last decade there were no substantial commissioning of new power plants in SEE region and the reserve margin was constantly decreasing. Several national power systems in the region are net importers of electricity. The paper considers development of power plants in Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia taking into account possible interconnections to neighboring areas. Development of energy sector was modeled integrally, taking into account oil, gas, coal and electricity sub-sectors. A linear programming model was developed for the simulation and optimization of the energy supply chain up to year 2030. Different development scenarios were considered and the results were compared – options for gas supply, role of nuclear power, use of renewable energy sources in electricity generation, limited CO2 emission and different energy/fuel/investment cost/price levels.
