Likovna baština Franjevačke provincije Sv. Ćirila i Metoda u 20. stoljeću.

The restoration of the Franciscan churches and monasteries started at the end of the 20th centuries in the spirit abd style of the Historicism, and was still underway when the Province of 6the Saint Cyril an Methodius was founded. This characterises the Franciscan art at the beginning of 20th century, which is beyond modern artistic trends. In architecture there are no new buildings until the thirties. At the beginning of the century the most important event is the completion of the restored central church of the newly founded Rrovince in Kaptol, Zagreb. The inside showes consistent re-gotization, according to the design of the architect H. Bolle. Here the foundation ceremony of the Province was celebrarted in 1902. The aesthetics of the restoration brought to the fresco painting a new concept of decoration, abonding the established iconography and illusionist painting of the baroque pariod, which is still ounly in fresco painting. One of the examples is a fresco of M. Antonini in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Požega with of motifs of the founders of the order and Franciscan martyrs. Two others are by O. Bierti in the Churchs in Saint Nicolas in Čakovec , and by I, Kršnjavi and O. Antonini depicting of life of the Saint Francis at the Chirch of Saint Francis at Kaptol in 1920. A few modern Croatian painters are present with their works such as M. Celestin Medovic and M. Rasica at Kaptol, Zagreb, and M. Racki in Ilok. An extraordinary painiting by I. Tsov , Adoration from 1923., was later donated to the francisc. monastery at Kaptol. In teh period the two world wars, Franciscans engaged in pastoral duties and activities in the newly established parishes of Bjelovar, Djurdjenovac, Djurmanac etc. They built new churchies and parish buildings, whose architecture was gradually modernized and with it the design of liturgical equipment. These are mostly modest buildings with a simple pgound-plan design with the exception of the crurch of St. George in Djurmanec, designd by the architect S. Podhorski (1939). Zhe painting production between the twop world wars was also scarce and most in quality of neo-realistic style achived by P. Gavranic in Djurdjenovac or in Zagreb. The first decade of teh second world war sow the circumstance of the newly established, religiously intolerant socialist society. Dur that period in teha interiors werw silwently being restored. Among the artist who bravely workd anathematized sacral sphere are two great crfoatian opainters: Ivo Rezek with fresco series Station of the Cross (1961-63) at Trsat, V. Kirin with series dedicated to the miraculous power of the Lady of Trsat, and Ivo Dulcic with the theme Hymns of the Brother Sun inteh franciscan churches at Kaptol, Zagreb. New churches and multy-functional pastoral center were built inthe seventies and eighties. Fwue of them are few typologicaly interesting examples as: churches and chapeles in Zapolje, Velisavac, Velimirovac etc. The complex construction of the Franciscan grammar school ion Samobor (1967/69) by architcts M. Salaj and E. Sersic is the first maturely conceived architectural idea realized in the contemporary manner . The church and parish building of the Holy Family in Osijek ba the arch. M. Biglbauer, and Holy Cross by the arch. M. Salaj and E. Sersic in Zagreb are two examples of pronounced modernism and functional solution for complex liturgical and pastoral purposes. The final touch oto the interior design of the Church of the Holy Cross providede the stained-glass windows by J. Bottery The Gesamtkunstwerk of this churches is completed marble liturgical inventary by P. Ruzevic and big sculpture od Crucifix by N. Grdinic. During the homland war meny sacral monuments of the Provnice were destroyd, and new werw built like: St. Anthony in Cakovec, and Church of the Most Precious Blood at Kozari Bok in Zagreb (1995-1999) Numerous artist was donated their paintings , drawings an sculpture to meny church and monasteray collections. The artistic heritage in this century, consistently followed and witnessed the historical development, pastoral activities, spiritual aspirations and cultural achivements of the Franciscans in the Province of the Saints Cyril and Methodius in the wide area of the continental Croatia.
