Phosphorus impacts on grain yield and quality of malting barley

The field experiment with ameliorative rates of phosphorus (P) fertilization was conducted (April 25, 2002) on the hydromorphic soil low in P (pH in KCl = 4.26 ; AL-available P = 6.80 mg P2O5100g-1) Brod-Posavina County (four replicates, basic plot 147 m2). Monoammonium phosphate (MAP: 12% N + 52% P2O5) was used on ordinary fertilization (0, 500, 1000 and 2000 kg P2O5 ha-1, for a, b, c and d respectively). Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN: 27% N) was used for equalization of different levels of nitrogen added by MAP. For next growing seasons (maize: 2003-2004 ; barley 2005) only ordinary fertilization was applied. Winter barley cultivar Rex developed at Agricultural Institute in Osijek was sown at the end of October 2004 (fertilization: 130 N + 125 P2O5 + 84 K2O kg ha-1). Residual influences of ameliorative P fertilization were significant but low because yields were increased only up to 10%. Acid reaction and reduction of plant density (probably because of excess of precipitation in December: Slav Brod = 116 mm) could be main responsible factors of low barley yields (t ha-1 = 3.02, 3.13, 3, 18 and 3.33, for a, b, c and d, respectively). In general, hectoliter mass (mean 71.65 kg), 1000-grain weight (mean 48.75 g), starch (mean 63.01) and protein (mean 11.9 %) contents in grain were independent on applied fertilization. Also, differences of mineral composition of barley grain were in a range of statistical error, but there was an inclination to decreasing of total Zn and Mo due to increasing of P application (mg kg-1: 46.7 Zn and 41.1 Zn ; 0.23 Mo and 0.18 Mo, for a and d, respectively).
