Weather impacts on yields of maize, sugar beet, soybeans and sunflower
In the 3-y period 2005-2007 mean harvested areas (ha year-1) of the field crops in Croatia were 301174 (maize), 52337 (soybean), 35222 (sunflower) and 31856 (sugar beet), respectively. Mean grain yields for 3-y tested period (t ha-1) were 6.13 (maize), 2.40 (soybean), 2.17 (sunflower) and 46.86 (sugar beet). Yields of maize and soybean in Croatia for the 2007 growing season were 4.94 and 1.95 t ha-1, respectively, and they were for 27% (maize) and 26% (soybean) lower than in previous two years (means 2005 and 2006: 6.73 and 2.63 t ha-1, for maize and soybean, respectively). Drought and high temperature stresses in summer, especially in July of 2007 (perarid conditions) were mainly responsible for low yield of these crops. Sunflower and sugar beet were more tolerant to this type of stress in comparison with maize and soybean.
