In great number of sports and sport disciplines that are part of Olympic Games, women participation and performances lag behind men’s. Also, girls and women were prohibited from running any race longer than 800m until the 1960s. This restriction resulted from a misconception that women were physiologically unsuited for endurance activity. Today, it is well known that longduration activity and competition do not have negative influence on health of female athletes. Major cardiovascular and respiratory adaptations accompany cardiorespiratory endurance training, and these adaptations do not appear to be sex specific. This paper addresses endurance training methodology as well as planning and programming of endurance training of female athletes, including program examples from basketball. Certain recommendations are made on how to organize endurance training during different phases of menstrual cycle.
