ON THE POTENTIAL OF HYDROPOWER PLANT DRAFT TUBE HYDRAULIC LOSS DECREASE
A CFD study of hydraulic losses was conducted in order to evaluate present and to propose new solutions of draft tube design at the hydropower plants. Analysis of fluid flow in the HPP outflow structures revealed areas of major contribution to the total losses. Variety of horizontally and vertically placed sheet metal rail vanes were simulated in turbine cone and draft tube elbow region to minimize hydraulic losses and decrease flow vorticity. Fluid flow structures were visually examined and integral quantities of all vane integrated designs were compared against HPP outflow structures without vanes. According to simulation results of various vane designs, guidelines for different construction were recommended and further work proposed.
