Influence of Maize Grain Endosperm Type on Broiler Chickens Performance
Maize contributes approximately 65% of the metabolizable energy and 20% of the protein in a poultry diets. It has been considered to have fairly constant nutritive value. However, recent studies have demonstrated that feeding value of maize can vary significantly based on animal performance. The objective of this study was to investigate differences among eight commercial maize hybrids in the proportion of horny and floury endosperm and production performance of broiler chickens. A total of 576 one day old broiler chickens were used in a eight treatment and six replicate performance trail. The chickens received a maize-soy based diet ad libidum and all treatments were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric. The diets consisted of 60% of the particular maize hybrid and 40% of supplemental feed. After the experimental period of three weeks it is concluded that chickens fed with horny type maize hybrids have significantly (P<0, 01) larger weight of the age of 21 days than chickens fed floury endosperm type maize hybrids.
