Mean blood flow velocities in posterior cerebral arteries during visual stimulation

Introduction/method: Mean blood flow velocities (MBFV) in posterior cerebral arteries (PCA) were analyzed in 51 healthy volunteers with their eyes wide open and closed, and during stimulation with white light. Measurements were carried out on a transcranial Doppler (TCD) Transcan EME device using a 2-MHz hand hold probe to insonate the right and left PCA. The study group of healthy volunteers included 27 men and 24 women aged 20-59 years ; mean age was 36, 98 years. Results: With the subjects' eyes open MBFV were 41, 2ą8, 5cm/s (mean ą SD) and 41, 7ą8, 9cm/s in the left and right PCA, respectively. With the subjects' eyes closed, MBFV were 27, 8ą8, 5 cm/s in the left PCA and 28, 2ą9, 1 cm/s in the right PCA. With white light stimulation MBFV were 42, 3ą9, 1 in the left PCA and 42, 4ą8, 8 cm/s in the right PCA. Results were compared by Wilcoxon test. There was no statistically significant dif ference between the left and right PCA. However, a statistically significant difference at a level of p<0, 001 was found between the values measured with the subjects' eyes open and closed for both PCAs. There was a statistically significant difference between eyes closed and white light stimulation in both PCAs, but there was no significant difference between values with eyes open and during white light stimulation. Conclusion: Results of this study could indirectly indicate that the metabolism in visual cortex has major influence on cerebral blood flow in posterior cerebral arteries.
