Adiponectin serum concentrations in dyslipidemic subjects with small dense LDL particles
Background. Adiponectin is a peptide hormone secreted by the adipose tissue which plays a significant role in the regulation of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. There is growing evidence that adiponectin has a protective effect against atherosclerosis and has recently been found to be decreased in coronary artery disease. Small dense LDL are potent atherogenic lipoprotein subclass and has been accepted as an emerging cardiovascular risk factor. We investigated the relationship between serum adiponectin levels and the occurrence of small dense LDL particles (pattern B) to evaluate the possible influence of this adipokine on LDL particle size distribution. Methods. We determined serum adiponectin concentrations in group of 43 dyslipidemic subjects with visceral adiposity and related metabolic syndrome, and in a group of 54 healthy blood donors with normal lipid profile and normal distribution of LDL particle size (pattern A). Serum adiponectin concentrations were determined by comercially available ELISA test (Mediagnost, Germany). LDL particle size determination was performed by gradient polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis developed in our laboratory. Results. The mean value of adiponectin concentrations in patient group was 18.513.3 g/mL and in the group of controls it was 11.87.8 g/mL. Pathologic LDL phenotypes (LDL phenotype B and LDL phenotype I) were detected in 29/43 (67.4%) dyslipidemic patients, and the mean value of adiponectin concentrations in this selected subgroup of patients was 11.77.2 g/mL. Conclusions. Our preliminary results suggest that an atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype including hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-cholesterol and also small LDL particle size are associated with lowered serum adiponectin concentrations.
