Silo Reconstruction after Dust Explosion
The silo in Ivanić Grad was built in the late nineteen sixties. It consists of two cell groups, each comprising fifteen cells for storage of cereal crops, and mechanical part located in-between. In July 2006 during maintenance welding works on steel piping an explosion occurred in the East cell group killing one and severely injuring two workers. Explosion destroyed some load-bearing and some non-load-bearing structural elements of the silo. This paper presents reconstruction design of the load-bearing structural elements including the destroyed cover slab of one silo cell, the damaged cover slabs of the adjacent cells, the severely damaged transverse girder of the roof slab and the wall between East cell group and mechanical part. The rehabilitation was constrained by the fact that the new cover slab had to be poured between undamaged ones and that formwork could not be drawn out without removing silo funnel.
