Croatian Identity and Multiculturality of Mediterranean in the Age of Globalization
The structure of Croatian identity, historical processes of its shaping, its present and future socio-cultural development, has been related between self-determination and integration into Euro-Atlantic and globalization processes. Croatian national and socio-cultural identity is based upon three European cultural traditions, so it includes three important components: Central European, Mediterranean and South-Slav Balkan The main objective of the project is to research the least known constituent of the Croatian identity, i.e. its Mediterranean component. The research has been focused upon the Mediterranean multicultural and civilizational characteristics and particularities as well as on their role in formation of Croatian cultural and political identity on the one hand, and upon the building of the new European cultural and civilizational identity in global context, on the other. It is religion that has been researched as one of the key constituents of cultural identity, in Croatian and in broader Mediterranean multicultural and multireligious context alike. Mutual influences of religious, cultural, national and political factors in the Mediterranean area, have been particularly observed in the context of clashes between traditional and modernizing-globalizational determinants. The longitudinal research of the relationship between the Mediterranean regional and Croatian national identity, as well as relation towards supposed elements of European identity will test the dynamics of development of Croatian identity, degree and quality of its change under the influence of Euro-Atlantic and globalizing integrative processes, on the one hand, as well as the opposite disintegrative impacts of globalization – i.e. «clash of civilisations», on the other. One of the contributions of the research project is to find out and investigate capacities for use the Mediterranean component of Croatian national and cultural identity in social, economic, political and other promotions of Croatian national interest in the context of forthcoming Euro-Atlantic integrations of Croatia and in the perspective of establishing various international relations and mutual influences which are carried by advanced processes of globalization.
