Is there Knowing without Thinking?
Because we are beings that act in a purposeful way, we anticipate, that is, go beyond the given or actual information. In a way, we are already geared into what comes to us without first waiting for the sensory confirmation. Background is in that sense not so much about the past (as memory is) but is rather in the service of what is going to come. It is a precondition for a possible actual action, and is thus a key notion in understanding human behavior. Portions of the background are taken and activated as the cognitive organism's best bet about what counts as our real world. And as our bets are changing according to the life circumstances that mutate permanently so we have to adapt all the time, to adjust and to anticipate. The way it is done, however, is mostly neither conscious nor controlled.
