Electrochemical characterization and identification of corrosion layer products on bronze artifacts using a voltammetry of micro particles
The deterioration of bronze artefacts is caused mostly by electrochemical corrosion (1). Depending on the corrosive environment, time of exposure, alloy composition, casting and surface finishing technology, various corrosion layers (patinas) form on bronze artefacts (2). The composition, structure and mechanisms of the formation of these corrosion layers can provide valuable information about the corrosion processes taking place on bronze surfaces and help us determine the level of corrosion attack and the stability or protectiveness of the corrosion layers formed. Furthermore, information obtained from corrosion layer composition and structure helps us to establish conservation-restoration measures that are needed to protect bronze from further deterioration. In the present poster, cyclic voltammetry of micro particles (VMP) attached to a carbon paste electrode has been applied (3-5). Patinas on two historical bronzes, Roman wheel from 1st century A.D. and renaissance sculptures from Dubrovnik watch-tower were investigated applying the VMP. In spite of the difficulties in the interpretation of voltammetric data due to the coexistence of various electro-active corrosion products with similar electrochemical responses, the inherent advantages of the applied method – experimental simplicity and sampling in micro to nanoscale – make this method attractive for wide application in conservation/restoration practice.
