The influence of different types of vegetation on microbial population in different soils of Western Herzegovina
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of different types of vegetation (meadow, swampy meadow, forest, vineyard and barley) on seasonal dynamics and abundance of microbial groups involved in nitrogen cycle (ammonifiers, nitrifying bacteria, free-living dinitrogen-fixing bacteria and Azotobacter chroococcum) in different soil types of Western Herzegovina. Microbial analyses of soil samples have been carried out by seasons during two-year research period. The highest number of ammonifiers was found in soil samples under the swampy meadow, meadow, under barley and forest from the autumn season because from that period new fresh organic substances flow into the soil. Nitrifying bacteria were weakly present under all types of vegetation because of certain physical and chemical characteristics of soils as well as the level of human influence. Aerobic nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixers were abundant under all types of vegetation. The species A .chroococcum was detected only in the summer season.
