Concept of Open Source Traffic Information System

Intelligent Transport System has an important role in increasing traffic efficiency. Development on mobile cellular networks and GNSS systems enables data collection on traffic flow status by using GPS enabled smartphone mobile devices and ordinary mobile devices without GNSS sensor. This paper presents the idea and solution for road traffic status estimation using only data from mobile phones, which are compared with data acquired from GNSS system as calibration data. Real time traffic flow information enables users to get more from traffic network, with increase on traffic safety and less impact on environment. This paper describes proof of concept of Traffic Information System built from open source software components. Open source software tools will be used to acquire, process, organise and store data about traffic flow in the City of Zagreb, and will provide reports about traffic flow status on the interactive web page.
