SIGMA – MEASURE OF QUALITY
The dispersion value defines the level of quality of a certain process or product characteristic. Since the measure of dispersion in statistics represents the standard deviation σ, it may be claimed that σ is at the same time the measure of quality. If level 6σ represents the practically perfect result (quality) the so-called σ-level of the process should be determined in order to estimate the possibility of its improvement. The examples presented in this paper show that the estimation of σ-level is not just the application of a simple statistical calculus.
