Influence of new vehicle types on road pavement design in Croatia
The design of road pavements in Croatia is performed under the standardized method based on the results of the AASHO Road Test. The main input parameters used in the designing process include the design period, the terminal pavement serviceability index, climatic – hydrological conditions, the load bearing capacity of the subgrade material, quality of materials used in the pavement and the traffic load. In pavement design, the traffic load expressed as the total number of the standard 80 kN axle load during the design period represents the parameter of the greatest influence. The standard for calculation of the total number of ESAL was made in 1981. Vehicle characteristics, as well as maximum axle loads, have been changed significantly since that time, both in Europe and in Croatia. The paper points out the need for thorough redefining of vehicle categories as are defined by the standard, as well as the method for calculation of the traffic load, as the pavements designed for the number of ESAL calculated for the vehicle categories defined by the current standard have the thickness of asphalt layers smaller by about 20% compared to those designed for the traffic load calculated for types of vehicles operating on the roads in Croatia today.
