Fertilization and gamete release of the tropical algae Caulerpa taxifolia
During the summer of 1998, in the Starigrad Bay area (43°10'54"N - 16°35'00"E) (Hvar Island, Adriatic Sea, Croatia), synchronous, morning spawning of the introduced species Caulerpa taxi-folia was observed. The fertile plants were visually detected 36 hours before the gametes were released. They had spottily depigmented thalli with papillae on the fronds and stolons. The gametes were released synchronously, approximately 30 min. before sunrise. The phenomenon was visible as a green cloud around the thalli, which persisted for 5 -10 minutes. We even observed more than 15 fertile plants releasing gametes in a same morning in an area of 10 m x 10 m between a depth of 0.5 and 2 m. After the gametes were released, the thalli became white and unturgescent. The empty plants disintegrated within 3 - 5 days.
