Attitudes of teachers toward the objectives of medical schools

Background: We took «The Medical School Objective Project» established by AAMC, and published in Accademic Medicine 1999, as a basis for the development of questionaire. It was 5-point Likert scale questionaire (1-not agree, 5-agree) with 30-items related to the four attributes of the physician: altruistic, knowledgeable, skillful and dutiful. Work done: The sample of 59 teachers come from two Croatian medical schools, 30 from Rijeka and 29 from Zagreb, 26 are females, and with averrage age of 41.8 years. The teacher exibited a great agreement with the sugested objectives in all atributes. Special hight agreement was found within the attribute of ethical responsibility (toward the patient 4, 9, toward the patient family 4, 9). Less agreement is found within the atribute of dutifulness, objectives related to conflict of interest due to financial and organisational aspects of helath care (4, 2) and social responsibility of the future doctors (4, 0). Conclusion: The results show that there are not big differences between AAMC experts and Croatian teachers in oppinions how future doctors should be prepared to meet society's expectations. Take-home message: We had also good experience in taking questionaire as a tool to facilitate discussion about curriculum development within the teaching course «Art of medical education».
