The Habsburg Military Frontier as a Phenomenon of Early Modern State Control
Through the eighteenth century the Military Frontier was subjected to several consecutive reorganizations that resulted in its alignment with the centralistic ambitions of the House of Habsburg. From the moment it came into existence the fate of the Frontier had been inseparably linked to the consolidation of the Habsburg Monarchy. Distinctive features of the early frontier system had been the dominant political influence of the Inner Austrian estates and extensive privileges of the Grenzer. During the age of Enlightenment the Imperial Court succeeded to replace the loose and largely autonomous organization of the Frontier with one of the most authoritarian forms of administration ever and successfully transform it into a bulwark of state control.
