Analysis of Secondary Forest Openness in Mountainous Areas as the Basis for Selecting the Length of Skidder Winch Rope
In order to properly and rationally manage forest ecosystems, a spatially optimal network of primary and secondary forest road infrastructure must be in place. There are various parameters used in the quantitative and qualitative assessment of existing forest road networks, and for defining sufficient or insufficient forest openness. Relative openness (primary or secondary) in combination with the method of buffer zones and GIS tools represent a very effective mean in the analysis of quantity and quality of primary and secondary forest roads, and gives a good visual overview of the analysis results. Research was conducted in the Management Unit Bovan-Jelar Forest Office Perušić, situated in the mountainous Lika region. GIS of the research area was established and a cadastre of primary and secondary forest roads was set up. An analysis of secondary openness for the skidder, model TimberJack 240 C, equipped with a single-drum or double-drum winch with rope lengths of 30, 45 and 60 m. The most favourable winch rope length was proposed, to allow load winching of all the processed wood material following targeted tree felling without descending from the forest road. Unopened areas were defined and a future route for tractor roads was proposed, which will thereby improve the existing network of secondary forest roads. An analysis of secondary openness was repeated in order to establish the optimal version of the secondary forest road network, and the results were compared with the current state of secondary openness.
