Regeneration of green alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl.) C. Agardh in natural and experimental conditions
Tropical green alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl.) C. Agardh was carelessly introduced into Mediterranean in about 1984. So far it was noticed that it reproduces only vegeta-tively by tallus fragmentation. Three localities with C. taxifolia in Adriatic Sea (two in North and one in the Middle Adriatic) were discovered. Its regeneration potential from tallus fragment was followed in situ in Starigrad Bay (island Hvar) as well as in the laboratory. A minimal length of frond fragments (found in situ) which regenerated the plant was 0.5 cm. Regeneration from stolon fragments (up to 2 cm long) was noticed only once in aquarium on damaged early spring specimen from Malinska (island Krk, northern Adriatic). Fragments of stolon which would show regeneration were not found in situ. In laboratory the regeneration of rhizoid fixed in substratum was noted only in low percentage. On the area carefully cleaned from C. taxifolia this kind of regenera-tion was followed in situ.
