Late-medieval and post-medieval foundry in the historic centre of Dubrovnik
An archaeological survey was undertaken on the site of Gornji ugao tower, in the northwest corner of Dubrovnik historic centre which has been included on the UNESCO′s World Heritage List. It provided evidence for the existence of a foundry which began life in the second half of the 15th century. It is a rare preserved example of this type of industrial site, and its position within the city walls makes it unique. The excavated parts of the foundry enabled an understanding of the technical subdivision and spatial logic of the site ; as well as allowing an accurate reconstruction of the complex. Numerous movable finds were located, such as fragments of graphite crucibles, slag, moulds and fragments of iron castings. The activity of this foundry on the northwest corner of the city ceased after the great Earthquake in 1667, and the site was used for landfill, partly covered with a thick fill of construction rubble. A smaller part of the site was used thereafter, also as a foundry, but more like an improvisation, as division into zones didn’t exist any longer. In the 18th century, the site was banked with another layer, forever terminating its original function.
