Activated Natural Zeolites on Textiles - Ability to Protect from Radioactive Contamination

Protection clothing from radioactive contamination was based on simple principle. Important was not to inhale the contaminated dust and air and to ensure that contaminated particles can not reach the skin. Therefore the density of the textile was crucial. New development, having in mind that textile is to be as light as possible, is linked towards the textiles which can chemically bind the contamination particles not allowing them to diffuse to the skin and not allowing them to be uncontrolled spread back into the environment. A great professional success in production would be if the clothing can be reusable (space station). That is why some of the new methods (or chemical preparations) while developing intelligent textiles are suggested. Activated natural zeolite clinoptilolite is microporous hydrated aluminosilicates crystals with well-defined structures containing AlO4 and SiO4 tetrahedral linked through the common oxygen atoms. It is nontoxic substance, excellent for adsorption of proteins and small molecules such as glucose. Due to its cationexchange ability, it has catalytic properties and for that multiple uses in medicine and industry, agriculture, water purification and detergents. Applied on textiles it was shown that provides excellent UV-R and microbes protection. Therefore, the present paper is an attempt to modify cotton fabrics with natural zeolite nanoparticles for ability to protect from radioactive contamination.
