Multi-scale modeling of regular open-cell cellular structures

Cellular structures are characterizing numerous biological materials such as, cork, bone, coral, wood, etc. Nowadays there are numerous applications of such structures, e.g. energy absorbers based on cellular structures are widely used in automotive, railway, ship and aerospace industry where the impact energy is absorbed and dissipated during the compaction of cellular structures. In our research the regular open-cell cellular structures have been numerically and experimentally investigated. In this work the experimental results and numerical modeling based on the homogenization principles are presented. The experimental results are used as a basis to formulate the finite element material model. In order to model open-cell materials on the macro-scale (i.e. level of an engineering structure), homogenization on the meso-scale (i.e. level of few unit cells) is an appropriate approach. This way, the non-linear effective material behavior determined from micro structural computations can be used within a classical FE2 framework which is used for computations on the macro-scale.
