Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis (Basellaceae), naturalised plant species in south Croatia

Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis is a perennial climber, known as highly invasive in many warm parts of the world, such as: southern Africa, Australia, southern Europe, Hawai'i, southern North America, the Pacific islands, New Zealand. Its native distribution is in South America, from Paraguay to southern Brazil and northern Argentina. In south Croatia, the species was already recorded as a decorative plant in gardens and parks at the beginning of the 20th century. Recently, Anredera cordifolia has been noted as being naturalised along the roadside in the composition of ruderal vegetation near Baćina. It was established for the first time on September 26, 2006, and again at the same locality during the following two years, on October 8, 2007 and on October 26, 2008. So far, the species can be characterised as having escaped from culture and become naturalised, but not invasive. The negative effect of alien plant species, especially those which have the feature of invasive spreading, is the displacement of the native flora and vegetation. Due to the possibility of its becoming invasive, the spreading of Anredera cordifolia in Croatia should be monitored in future floristic investigations.
