The species Carex randalpina B. Walln. in Croatia

Carex randalpina B. Walln. was mentioned, for the first time, in 1962, by Seibert of Germany, under the provisional name C. oenensis. Long after that, in 1993, Wallnöfer validly described the species. Until now, Carex randalpina has been known from the following countries: Austria, Germany, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Concerning the presence of the species in the Croatian flora, Wallnöfer, in 1994, in a review of the Carex genus from the collections of the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb (ZA), found one incomplete specimen by Ljudevit Rossi from the locality of Švarča in the Mrežnica river valley near Karlovac and designated it Carex randalpina or C. ×oenensis. During field research in the Krapina river valley carried out in 2006, 2007 and 2008, Carex randalpina was found at four localities (Bedekovčina, Kupljenovo, Luka, and between Pojatno and Novi Dvori) and confirmed for the Croatian flora. In habitats, the species grows in dense stands which belong to the marshland association Caricetum randalpinae, to the alliance Magnocaricion elatae, order Phragmitetalia and class Phragmito-Magnocaricetea. The community develops in wet habitats, usually without stagnant water. In the species composition there grow a small number of taxa. Besides Carex randalpina, the dominant and character species of the association, the other species with the highest frequency are: Calystegia sepium, Filipendula ulmaria, Carex hirta, Lathyrus pratensis and Rubus caesius.
