Review of Microbial Corrosion of Concrete
Microbiologically influenced corrosion causes significant deterioration of concrete, resulting in premature degradation and need for repair of municipal wastewater collection and treatment systems. Research carried out worldwide shows that concrete subjected to wastewaters and sewer sludge faces severe deterioration and binder destruction due to sulphates, acids, carbon dioxide, etc. In this paper an overview is presented of microbial corrosion process which occurs when concrete is exposed to micro bacteria and biodegradation favourable environments. In addition, a description is given of the mechanisms of sulphuric acid creation (sulphur cycle), deterioration of concrete in sewer systems and agro-industry and the methods for testing resistance of concrete to microbial corrosion.
