Retrospective study of dental treatment under general anesthesia in Croatia

AIM. The aim of the present study was to get an overview of the level of oral health in patients suffering from dental anxiety as well as in patients with special needs. We also also tried to analyze which dental procedures were often used during dental treatment under general anaesthesia. METHODS. By retrospective analysis of medical records, a representative sample of 549 patients (281 male and 268 female), treated under general anaesthesia was collected. We used data from patients’ medical history, anaesthetic protocol as well as from dental procedures protocol. The examinees were divided in three age groups: first group 5-10 years (134 patients), second group 10-20 years (281 patients) and third group 20-30 years (134 patients). RESULTS. After statistical analysis, it could be concluded that the largest number of extractions was done in the third test group (60% of all procedures in third group). The largest number of fillings was observed in the first test group (63% of all procedures in first group). The highest number of endodontic treatment was done in the second test group (40% of all procedures in second group). We also found a high influence of early dental treatment on the level of oral health in those patients. CONCLUSION. Use of general anaesthesia is sometimes the best way for treating patients with special needs or high dental anxiety. We can also expect a better level of oral health when the dental treatment is done during the period of primary and mixed dentition.
