Image Analysis in 3D Printing Reproduction
3D printing is a powder-based rapid prototyping technique, based of conventional ink jet printing. The virtual CAD object is sliced in layers and build by consecutively printing and joining layers of basic materials, the powder and the binders. The prints are usually further post-processed by applying infiltrants (cyanoacrylates, epoxy resins). 3D printing process by ZCorporation, described in this paper, can produce full coloured objects, as it uses both clear and coloured binders. In this work, the image analysis procedures, widely used in printing industry and graphic technology, are being researched as methods for studying the reproduction of surface elements in 3D printing. In order to observe the possible differences in reproduction caused by relative positions of prints surfaces in the build bed, custom-developed test plates were placed in different orientations. The printed test plates respective surfaces were scanned and analyzed with ImageJ, by using built-in and custom developed procedures.
