Ozone influence on bacterial reduction during endodontic treatment
Objective: The purpose of this in vivo study was to prove the efficiency of ozone therapy on the bacteria in root canal. Methods: Study was conducted on 37 root canals. Root canals were treated using step-back technique with 2.5 % sodium hypochlorite drainage. After completion of the chemomechanical treatment first swab was taken with a sterile paper point following rinsing canal with saline solution. Canal was dried and Ozone was applied for 40 sec. Then second swab was taken in the same way as the first time. Swabs were stored in the transport media until microbiological analysis was performed. The data obtained by the study were statistically processed with SPSS computer program. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease in number of bacteria (p<0, 001): 67% of aerobic, 93% of anaerobic and 82% of the total number of bacteria. Conclusion: The results have shown the efficiency of the ozone therapy on aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in root canal therapy. This study was supported by Grant 065-0352851-0410 of MZOS, Croatia
