Nanostructures of Cationic Dodecylbenzene Sulphonates
The interaction of cadmium nitrate with sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate in water (Cd(NO3)2/HBBS/H2O) and seawater (Cd(NO3)2/HBBS/seawater) was investigated with the aim to determine nanostructures in the processes of crystalline and liquid crystalline phase formation. The textures of phases were identified by polarisation microscopy. The stoichiometry and cadmium dodecylbenzenesulphonate morphological forms were determined using scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry, thermogravimetry, and light scattering. The results are in full agreement with interplanar distances of surfactant bilayers determined earlier using small angle X-ray diffraction. In addition, quantitative analysis was performed with energy detectors for chemical elements on a SEM JEOL JSM-5800 at room temperature. The structures of surfaces and the interior of the crystals were determined. The stoichiometric relation was proved for the solid crystalline phase, while in the case of liquid crystals formation the results of atomic absorption spectrometry showed a different relation between quantities of cadmium and dodecylbenzenesulphonate, [Cd2+] : [DBS-] 7 : 1. The concentration and apparent solubility products of Cd(DBS)2 were calculated to amount to Ksoc = (3.650.61)x10-12 mol3 dm-9 and Ksoapp = (2.890.62)x10-12, resp.
