L-Carnitine supplementation and body mass reduction

Because of its role in the transport of fatty acids from cytosol into mitochondrion, the consumption of L-carnitine became popular among athletes, and now is becoming more and more popular as a mass loss supplement among sedentary population. In an attempt to obtain more data on the effect of L-carnitine supplementation on body mass reduction, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried. Healthy volunteers (N=30), aged 18 to 32 years, with declared sedentary activities, received 2 g/day of either L-carnitine or placebo for 2 weeks. At the beginning of the experiment as well as after two weeks, the height and the body mass of participants were measured and the body mass index was calculated. Based on the results of skin folds measurements the ratio of body fat was determined. In the blood samples taken on the first and the last day of the experiment, the concentration of total and free carnitine was measured. During the experiment, volunteers were making detailed records about the food and drinks they consumed every day. During the experiment no significant difference was found between control and treated group for carbohydrate, protein, fat or total energy intake. The estimated average daily intake of carbohydrates was 52 %, fats 33 % and proteins 15 %. Despite the fact that the concentration of carnitine in a blood serum of treated individuals increased, the carnitine supplementation did not result in statistically significant reduction neither for body mass nor for body fat ratio. It was concluded that carnitine supplementation per se, without additional physical activity or reduced energy intake, can not reduce body mass or body fat ratio.
