Seasonal colonization dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates in a woodland stream
The seasonal differences in colonization dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates were quantified using the equilibrium model. As a reflection of life histories, summer colonization experiment had the lowest asymptotic species diversity and winter the highest. The temporal point of stabilization, assessed as 99% of asymptotic value, differed among seasons. It was the shortest during the summer (1.1 days), and the longest during the autumn (39.4 days). An application of equilibrium model on species diversity data of functional feeding groups gave an insight in their colonization curves, which showed seasonal differences. Rapid stabilization of species diversity was achieved by scrapers during the summer, predators in the autumn and shredders in the winter colonization experiment.
