Appearance of vaginal duplication in outbred CD1 mice
The dorso-ventral vaginal septum (DVS) is a malformation appearing sporadically in inbred mouse strains. As well as noticing its appearance in the inbred C57BL/6 strain, we observed it in a colony of outbred CD1 mice originating from a commercial supplier and kept in the local mouse house. The malformation was always present as a longitudinal septum positioned in the dorso-ventral direction. Histological analysis showed that both parts of the septate vagina are independent and have separate muscular layers divided by a common adventitia. We therefore consider the observed anomaly to be a complete vaginal duplication rather than a presence of a fibrous septum. Because of the genetic heterogeneity wihtin the outbred mouse stock we performed the breeding analysis by crossing the animals with DVS in order to isolate the mouse line which carries the putative gene mutation causing the DVS. Animals with DVS were fertile, but intercrosses between their offspring did not show an increase in DVS frequency. We conclude that the DVS phenotype in outbred CD1 mice is not caused by a mutation of a single gene, but rather that several genes, genetic background and enviromental factors can be involved.
