Demonstration of Lawsonia intracellularis in necrotic ileitis cases by immunohistochemistry
The aim of present study was to detect presence of Lawsonia intracellularis in pig by immunohistochemistry. Totally, 11 fattening pigs from three diffeternt units onset dying without clinical symptoms or with greyish diarrhoea shortly before death were necropsied. Tisseu was routinely processed and stained with H&E. For immunohistochemical detection is used anti Lawsonia intracellularis (Euroclone) monoclonal antibodies according previously described protocol. In our cases most prominent histopathological findings were necrosis of apex of villi and absence of goblet cells. In ileum of 5 animals strong signal in enterocytes were detected by IHC. According to histopathological findings and positive IHC signal in enterocytes of fattenig swine with necrotic ileitis are fulfield key criteria which confirmed first objective findings of Lawsonia intracellularis as proliferative enteropathy causative agent in Croatia.
