Mass transfer analysis of lead uptake on fixed bed of natural zeolite

In this study, the constant pattern wave model in combination with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms was adopted to describe the breakthrough curve for lead uptake on a fixed bed of natural zeolite. The mass transfer volumetric coefficient in the external liquid film (KLa) and the time when the effluent concentration reaches half of the feed concentration (t1/2) were determined. These parameters were related to process variables such as flow rate and the initial solute concentration. The time t1/2 decreases with increasing flow rate and initial concentration. The KLa shows a significant increase followed by a slight decrease with increasing flow rate, but shows no significant change with increasing initial concentration. Values of KLa are lower than the mass transfer volumetric coefficient in the external film (kfa) calculated from the Sherwood number. It implies that other resistances such as solid-phase mass transfer resistance exist and play a certain role in the overall mass transfer rate of lead uptake on a fixed bed of natural zeolite.
