New horizons in fish farming
In the following years marine aquaculture is expected to be a growing contributors to te production of marine food in the Mediterranean. It is going to be an important economic sector for many coastal and island countries in the region. In order to advance mariculture industry A concentrate effort and collaborative research will support further improvement of aquaculture industry and its environmental sustainability. The emphasize will be given on applied research focusing main challenges dealing with the number of environmental and zootechnical issues and production management as to get cheaper and better end product. Sinergy with ICZMP and various maritime activities will be an important priority. Zootechnical aspect will focus on further development of grow-out technology (offshore), improvement of breeding programme much less dependent on the contribution of wild stocks focusing on broodstock management and fingerling production of fast growing species including pelagic ones (bluefin tuna, yellowtail etc...). Environmental aspect is going to be improved by minimizing the environmental impact of mariculture industry on the marine environment and by avoiding conflicts among users that will significantly improve public perception of the industry.
