Application of 3D printing in packaging design

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is one of the latest modelling techniques. Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the process was subsequently licensed to the Z Corporation for prototyping applications and ProMetal for tooling. The process technology itself is based on Ink Jet printing ; it employs a similar method of jetting the binder material in a form of controlled droplets which join the powder particles together. 3D printing is a type of rapid prototyping (RP) or solid freeform fabrication (SFF) which employs inkjet printing technology to fabricate three-dimensional objects. In 3D printing, physical objects are “built” directly from computer aided design data, created using 3D modelling software, or acquired through 3D scanning of existing artifacts, such as hand-made models or maquettes. The 3D ink-jet printing process functions by building parts in number of layers of defined thickness. The layers have been sliced by computer algorithms from the CAD model of the designed 3D object. For each layer or cross-section of the 3D model, the powder particles are distributed over the printing surface by the roller and selectively joined by jetted binder material. After a layer of powder and binder have been applied, the build bed support piston is lowered, powder bed support piston is raised and the next layer of powder is applied, followed by the binder material. This process is repeated until the object is finished.
