Expression of bone morphogenetic proteins in kidney development
The mammalian kidney is induced by reciprocal interaction between the ureteric bud and the metanephric mesenchyme. Upon induction, te mesenchymal cells aggregate and are converted to epithelium which undergoes a series of morphological changes that generate the glomerular, proximal and distal tubule epithelium. Bone morphogenetic proteins are members of the TGF-B superfamily. The role of OP-1 (BMP-7) has recently been established. In order to characterize the temporal expression of BMPs from day 11 of mouse embryonic development up to six months of postnatal life RT-PCR has been performed. The results demonstrate that BMP-2,-6 and OP-1 (BMP-7) are expressed on day 11 of mouse development, with OP-1 being the most abundant one. Subsequently, BMPs 2-5 and OP-1 are downregulated, while the expression of BMP-6 might contribute to the differentiation of nephrogenic mesenchyme and the maintenance of the kidney function after birth.
