Functionality Evaluation of Children Summer Knitwear

Children summer clothing that is in direct contact with skin is often exposed to the influence of water, bodily excretions (saliva, urine, sweat), solar UV radiation and frequent washing. High functional and health risk free requirements are set for this type of clothing. Functionality evaluation of knitted children’s clothing, a need for supplementing the existing standards dealing with this topic, as well as a need for further development of test methods, have been established. The paper investigates the quality of interlock knitting in different colours before and after simulated conditions of use, employing the proposed testing program, that including determination of: dimensional stability after multiple domestic washing, fabric propensity to surface piling ; colour fastness to washing, to water, to perspiration (according to the standardised test methods) and to saliva and urine (non-standardised methods). Fabric UV protective properties were evaluated according to the modified UV Standard testing program. Spectrometric testing of new samples, 5 times washed samples and samples after 7000 piling rubs in a dry and wet state (water, saliva, urine, sweat) was carried out. The results obtained indicate: high colour fastness to water and bodily excretions of the samples, lower colour fastness to washing, dependency of dimensional changes in washing on fabric structural characteristics, dependency of pilling affinity on the abradant type and the changes UV protective properties of the samples after simulation of wear and care.
