The elements of play in Croatian culture [Elementi igre u hrvatskoj kulturi]

The first part of the paper discusses the meening of the word play. It appeared in the Croatian language in the 13th century and conveyed the following meanings until the 19th century ; (1) ludus, (2) iocus, (3) dance. Each meaning was connected with a certain Croatian region, i. e., the rules of play were determined by spatial (geographical) configuration. Based on Huizinga' s concept pf play, Caillois' classification of games, the paper then considers the manifestation of play and the emergence of the ludic in different aspects od Croatian culture during the 20th century (literature, theater, fine arts, architecture, music, film, radio, television, press, video, computers, natural sceineces), with particular reference to the spatial coordinates. In the third part of the paper concentrates on the crossing of the supposed spatial boundary set by rules originating in nature and those created in the culture of Dubrovnik – the southernmost city of Croatia, and a symbol of harmony between the beauty of its landscape amd the aesthetic value of its arhitecture. Considered from a semiotic viewpoint the play between nature and culture (especially in the areas of theatre and sports) has been practiced in Dubrovnik from the Midle Ages until today. The final part of the paper focuses on the Utopian concept of Dubrava, which has believed for many centuries, and in which Dubrovnik was seen as a symbolic City of Freedom, Art, and Beauty – an ideal blend of Mediterranean nature and the European culture.
